Pop to the Shops Board Game

Pop to the Shops Board Game

Help children learn about handling money and giving change with this fun shopping game.

Race and count your 3D character from shop to shop, using play money to buy lots of different items! The winner is the first person to collect 6 items on their board. This fun board game offers older Orchard Toys fans longer and more varied gameplay than some of our traditional matching games.

Children will learn about handling money and giving change as well as developing their imagination as they take on the roles of shop keeper and banker, playing with realistic pretend money. They will also be taught about good manners, as they must say 'please' and 'thank you' to the shopkeeper every time they buy an item!

Not suitable for children under 3years due to small parts. Choking hazard.

My 4 year old daughter chose this game as she loves to play shops. I was worried as the age range is 5-9 however she loves it.

The game is easy to play with 2-4 players and adapt as necessary. You take it in turns to roll the dice and move the necessary number of spaces to the required shop. It helps with counting and understanding money and good manners and communication skills: ‘Hello shopkeeper, can I buy some donuts please’.

All in all a great game that keeps our 4 year old daughter, 6 year old nephew and 8 year old niece amused.

Hands-on learning is so often the best; we can encourage our children to do workbooks about money (and these certainly have their place) but playing games is much more fun and will really instill the principles in a way they will remember – and they will see it as fun. This fun shopping board game will teach children about handling money and giving change as they travel around the board from shop to shop, using pretend money to buy all manner of different items.

The rules are clearly explained and simple to follow, so there’s no lengthy setting up or explaining to do; the winner is the first to collect all their six allocated items – but beware! You mustn’t overspend. Role play is a key part of this game, as each player takes it in turn to be either shopper or shopkeeper. Players travel around the board, visiting the correct shop to purchase their items. Of course, they will need to greet each other politely, so the game also encourages polite conversation and increases vocabulary.

Great experience and confidence-building for real-life shopping. Familiar shops and objects are used, including a market, bakery, newsagent and greengrocer. The game includes a game board; 48 item cards; 4 shopping bag boards; 4 characters with stands; play money; dice and instruction leaflet. It’s good to know that the instructions are always available for download from the Orchard Games website too. This is an excellent game, fun to play with lots of educational value; it’s one children will enjoy playing over and over agai

Fun, enjoyable, educational game

We have a few Orchard Toys games already and, as predicted, our newest edition didn't disappoint. My 6 year daughter was initially not keen on a game which taught the value of money and basic maths, but after one go she is hooked! She loves asking the various shopkeepers for items and is quickly learning to hand over the correct amount of money-and that sometimes you can't always spend everything at once!! A really well thought out game. I have already recommended this to several of my friends for their children.

Learning through play

Reviewed by Nicki Cawood on 20 May 2014

I am a big fan of children learning through play, as I think it's the best way to get new ideas and concepts across (and keep their interest!). My 4.5yr old is currently being introduced to money in his numeracy at school, and this game backs this up brilliantly, both now with identifying coins and adding up and later when it comes to learning about giving change etc.

This is a great fun game and perfect if your little ones enjoyed the "Shopping List" game. A firm favourite in our house!

This was purchased for my then 5 year old son, he is now nearly 7 & it's one of his favourite games. It encourages counting with money in a relaxed way & allows children to become familiar with the different denominations of change.

Pop To The Shops

My son has fallen in love with Orchard toys ever since he first received jigsaws as birthday presents when he was 2. This was a much wanted game for his 4th birthday, and while we were initially worried it might be too old for him, we needn't have. All the games are wonderfully colourful, interesting, durable and easy to play. This especially is a firm favourite as it combines a love of shopping and playing. It's fantastic for helping children with their counting, learning about money and generally learning to take turns.

My son loves to be the banker and has a great grasp of how to make up the right amount of money from the coins he has. The games are interesting enough to hold their attention and it's always great fun to see who can fill their basket first.

I would recommend any Orchard game to anyone and have found them all to be fantastic learning tools.

Educational Fun

Reviewed by Wendy Hirst on 20 May 2014

My children love to play shops and they thought this game was great and they get to handle money even if it was only play money. This is a great role play game.

You are given a shop to look after and you have the choice of Newsagent, Bakery, Green Grocer and Mini Market. The object of the game is to fulfill a shopping list without over spending. You place all the cards face down on the table, pick a card up and make your way round the board to the shop that sell the item that is on your card, you do this by rolling the dice. This is great for promoting turn taking and counting as it encourages the child to count as you move your character round the board.

When you get to the shop you have to ask the shop keeper politely for the item and pay for it. This helps promote social interaction, value of coins and encouraging children with their maths.

The boards to make up the game are very well constructed and illustrated to fit in with the game. The pieces are big enough for younger children to pick up. For 20 minutes of educational fun I can fully recommend the Pop to the Shops game.

I purchased this when my son had just turned 4 as he played it at nursery. It is a really good way to introduce maths and for my son to understand how money is used to pay for items at the shops.
