Top Tips for Teaching Your Child from Home

Parents across the country have found themselves faced with home-schooling their children and whilst this initially seems like a daunting prospect, there’s actually lots of fun to be had! Here’s our top tips to help make teaching your children at home as stress-free as possible, for you and the kids!

  1. Structure

Try to follow a normal daily routine to help children to get in the mindset of school and learning.  This could be as simple as encouraging children to get out of bed and have breakfast at the same time and having routine activities such as PE lessons with Joe Wicks.

  1. Variety

To keep children interested try to mix up what activities they do. For example some activities outside, they could do some activities by themselves and some with parents/siblings and you could vary whether they use a screen or not. Making a  timetable together ensure they are getting the variety they would at school and will help to get them excited and interested in different activities.

  1. Downtime

Don’t feel as though you have to fill every waking second – children need downtime as much as you will! You don’t want to find yourselves burning out early on, plus the downtime offers parents the chance to do their own work or plan the next lesson. You could encourage children to watch Blue Planet or National Geographic as a way to keep them learning in a relaxed way.

  1. Outdoors and Fresh Air

A bit of fresh air solves everything  - lessons and free time can both be spent outside to help break up the day and it will help concentration levels too if you mix up the setting.

  1. Rules and Rewards

Having a set of rules and boundaries like being kind and respectful, being ready to learn and no interrupting will help everything to run smoothly and will help to avoid conflicts. Rewards are just as important so try introducing a star chart or stickers - the rewards can be as simple going to bed 5 minutes later or choosing the family film to watch or 20p.

  1. Life Skills

Don’t feel like you just need to focus on English, Maths and Science as there’s lots of other valuable life lessons that children can learn too, like gardening, cooking and cleaning – this will help to make your life easier too!

  1. Fun!

The most important thing of all is have fun! There are a lot of resources out there to help take the pressure out of home-schooling and not everything needs to involve sitting down and studying; children learn through play and games are a great way to ensure that children have fun whilst they learn.
